Christmas cards tips & tricks

tip

I have not been too good posting my tips and tricks, I'm sorry! A lot going on and I am already freaking about the Holidays and all preps!!  So, if you are a little like me, you want to make sure all your cards are made up and ready to go ASAP... so here are some tricks to make fabulous and yet fast Christmas cards:

- pick a theme and make at least 6 cards that are either the same or identical. If you get bored making more than 1 or 2 identical cards (like I do), stick to the theme and vary the stamp or ribbon - just  change little details that do not take you long to figure out.

- once you pick a theme, pick one or two sketches and make sure you have all the embellishments and tools you need to complete that given sketch. If you need punches, brads, ribbons, etc, separate them into a box and check you have enough. SU! orders normally only take a couple of days to arrive, but because it is Christmas, there could be delays.

- pick one or two stamp sets that go with the theme and sketches and make sure you have the ink pads needed to complete the project.

- use DSPs when layering. DSPs always help adding depth to cards and dressing them up.

- if you want to make traditional Christmas cards, stick to the red and green, but remember there are beautiful alternatives as well - bashful blue and whisper white, old olive and kraft, kiwi kiss and Elegant Eggplant, Chocolate Chip and Real Red, etc.

- add glitter. Holidays ask for sparkles... sparkly cards are always a hit.

- make all the cards in a set the same size and shape... and make sure you have envelopes for whatever shape you are planning on going with.

- use punched shapes such as stars to finish the cards and add interest.

- use wide ribbons. SU! has gorgeous wide ribbons available to make any card fabulous.

- if you are going to make special cards - you know, the one-of-a-kinds for those special people in your life - don't try to make them all in one day... make a series of simple ones then switch to a special one and alternate tis way until you are all done. It's easier to keep motivated for the simple ones if you allow for a splurge here and there :o)

- if you decide to emboss, emboss all the images for several cards (or one or two series) first, then assemble them.

- use embellishments - large brads, buttons, shapes, look great as focal points and are a quick solution.

Tricks and Treats #2

Have you noticed that Stampin Up® ink pads are actually up side down to keep the ink on the pad's surface?  The Stampin Up® ink pads swivels to the up side down position but the Versamark one does not. Always store the Versamark pad upside down to achieve the same purpose and great quality stamping every time.

Tricks & Treats

haloween 2009

In honor of Halloween and the leaves'a'turning season that I so love and miss dearly (sighs...) I am starting a tricks session - just little tips that I have discovered or compiled along the way: obvious when you figure it out, but valuable to novice and seasoned crafters as well - we can all learn together !

So keep an eye out for the new Tricks & Treats posts. I am sure you will find something here you did not know!!

Ribbons treats and tricks

1. when working with ribbons that frail, cut them the right length then pass the flame of a lighter close to it to seal the ends. BE CAREFUL. Some materials are very inflammable. Make sure the flame is small. Sometimes a candle works well.

2. dip your white ribbon in tea for a beautiful kraft color result - or similar tone, depending on the tea.

3. light colored ribbons can also be tinted in matching inks to your stamps using sponge daubers and leaving it to dry. I find it that drying with an emboss gun makes the ink darker.

4....   I will be adding to these tricks as time goes by and I learn more. If you have any tricks you'd like to share, please leave me a message.

Using Versamark in your projects

VersamarkWe had a lot of fun playing with Versamark last evening... here's some hints:

Two Step Stamping

Stamp the first image with VersaMark and then the second with an Encore! metallic pad. Technique looks best on darker, richer tone card stocks (e.g., Bravo Burgundy, Handsome Hunter).

Journaling Lines

Looking for a way to create subtle journaling lines? Ink one of our journaling stamps with the VersaMark pad and stamp on a piece of coloured card stock. Once the ink is dry, journal with a Stampin' Write journaler or marker. VersaMark is an acid-free ink and safe for scrapbook pages.

Embossing

Use the VersaMark pad like you would any of our pigment ink pads in your embossing projects. Because VersaMark is a clear ink, you can use the embossing powder colour of your choice without the colour of the pigment pad showing through the embossed powder.

... with Classic Pads

Ink and stamp with one of our Classic Stampin' Pads. Clean the stamp and then ink the same image with VersaMark, stamping directly over the image. Apply clear embossing powder and heat with embossing tool. Note: For best results, use the Stamp-a-ma-jig stamp positioner to help line up the image stamped with Classic pads and the embossed image.

...on Glass

Prior to stamping, rub the Embossing Buddy over the stamping surface. Stamp the image on a glass container with the VersaMark pad, and then emboss with detail gold or silver for an elegant touch to any piece of glassware.  Note: This technique is recommended for decorative purposes only. Embossed images can scratch off or come off when washed.

Poppin' Pastels

Stamp the image with the VersaMark ink pad on a piece of neutral-coloured card stock (Whisper White, Very Vanilla, etc.). Apply Stampin' Pastels with sponge daubers, stamping sponge, or pastel applicator directly to the ink.

Resist

Stamp on Glossy White card stock with the VersaMark pad. Ink the rubber brayer with a Classic or Spectrum pad, and roll over the card stock. Wherever the VersaMark ink was stamped, the card stock resists the coloured ink from the brayer. Note: This technique can also be done with a Gold Encore! pad.

Emboss Resist

Stamp an image with VersaMark ink and emboss with Crystal Clear embossing powder. When the image is cool, sponge one or more colours of Classic ink over and around embossed image. The stamped image will resist the ink.

Reverse Pastels

Apply Stampin' Pastels (bright colours work best) to a dark-coloured card stock (Basic Black, Night of Navy, Close to Cocoa, etc.) and then stamp over the chalked area. The ink pulls off the colour of the chalk, revealing the paper beneath. Be sure to clean the stamp before re-inking, as the chalk you removed is now on your stamp and will dirty your VersaMark pad.

Watermark

Create a great tone-on-tone effect by stamping on a piece of coloured card stock. The image appears a deeper shade than the card stock and is perfect for subtle backgrounds
